What is the difference between the work of DoP and the gaffer on the set of a puppet or live action film? Does the miniature scale and stop frame technique create difficulties, or the opposite - opens up a spectrum of possibilities? 


About the debaters:

Kat Woodlti is a septilingual stop motion camera assistant and screenwriter of Czech and Swiss heritage currently based in Berlin and Zürich. She has worked on Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr Fox and Isle of Dogs, as well as on Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie before venturing into screenwriting and production assisting. She specialises in bringing to life amazing, untold stories about remarkable historical figures with a focus on women and the LGBTQ+ community. 

Mark Swaffield has over 25 years experience working as a camera assistant/operator in television and film, beginning as an apprentice in 35mm camera effects work, learning the art of aerial-image; multi-plane; compositing in-camera with matte painting and motion control. This led to feature work at effects companies in Pinewood and Bray studios, ending with the cel animated feature “Balto” at Amblimation. Furthermore Mark entered the world of children’s series animation, joining D.O.P. Malcolm Hadley’s team, assisting him on numerous shows. Since then Mark has worked on over one hundred commercials and many stop motion features, including Tim Burton’s “Corpse Bride” and “Frankenweenie” or Wes Anderson’s “Fantastic Mr.Fox”, “Isle of Dogs” and “The French Dispatch”.

Jan P. Trzaska - graduated from Cinematography at Lodz Film School, photographer, author of documentaries and DP for live action, documentary and stop motion films. As a cinematographer, he created special effect sequences on miniatures for an award-winning TV series "Kids of Courage" dir. by Matthias Zirzow and worked on a number of stop motion projects, such as medium length films: "The Bridge" by Izumi Yoshida and "The Forgotten Book" by Agata Gorządek, as well as a short "Astra" by Michal Lubinski.

Adam Jones - a long time collaborator with the animation community in the USA, Adam is a veteran camera nerd and visual artist from the West Coast. He helped his friends and colleagues at LAIKA Studios, Shadow Machine, and Starburns create some memorable stop-motion work from past years including Coraline, Kubo and the Two Strings, and the upcoming release, Pinocchio.
